Treatment
Orthodontic treatment is used to correct a “bad bite.” This condition, known as a
malocclusion, involves teeth that are crowded or crooked. In some cases, the upper and
lower jaws may not meet properly and although the teeth may appear straight, the
individual may have an uneven bite. Protruding, crowded or irregularly spaced teeth and
jaw problems may be inherited. Thumb-sucking, losing teeth prematurely or accidents
also can lead to these dental conditions.

Correcting the problem can create a nice-looking smile, but more importantly, orthodontic
treatment results in overall dental health. That's because crooked and crowded teeth
make cleaning the mouth difficult, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and
possibly tooth loss. An improper bite can interfere with chewing and speaking, can cause
abnormal wear to tooth enamel, and can lead to problems with the jaws.

Kids
The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends that children have a
routine orthodontic consultation no later than 7 years old. Typically, the youth may have a
variety of growth issues such as overbite or crowding which can be addressed prior to
permanent teeth erupting. Typically most adolescents who need braces will begin
treatment between 9-13 years old.

Adults
There is not an ideal age or eligibility for braces. Many adults choose to begin treatment
for both cosmetic and quality of life issues. As a practice, Johnson Orthodontics provides
specialized adult Orthodontia to many well-known Chicago professionals and athletes.
Please feel free to ask for an adult reference.

Occlusion/Malocclusions

The proper treatment will be determined by incorporating diagnostic skills and
technology. There are three standard types of bites which are referred to as occlusions in
orthodontics. Deviations in intramaxillary and/or intermaxillary relations of teeth from
normal occlusion are not uncommon. Often referred to as a bad bite, malocclusions are
often associated with other dentofacial deformities.
Class I - Normal Occlusion - Crowding and spacing
Class II - Overjet / Overbite
Class III - Underbite
  • Please discuss your case in more detail with the specialist since there are
thousands of varieties and severities of the case classes.
